Disappointingly four Moyne Shire councillors have voted to support a lifting of the conventional gas moratorium and will write a letter to the Premier Daniel Andrews.
This motion put forward by Cr Ian Smith came out of the blue this week, without any consultation from communities, and especially those who have campaigned for the Fracking ban and support the upcoming conventional Gas Program.
‘The Moyne Shire councillors that supported this motion must not have any understanding of the upcoming gas program’ said Genevieve from Port Fairy. ‘The Gas Program will not only give the state data on the probable chance of conventional gas, but ensure community engagement is part of the process. Something that the Moyne shire is happy to by-pass. It’s not good enough’.
We hope the Resource Minister sees this for what it is, and understands it is not the communities wishes to have the moratorium lifted. Gas prices are being felt by consumers but we now know exporting our gas and market manipulation has driven this increase. More gasfields in Victoria right now, will not solve our energy problems, if there is at all, any commercial quantities.
The Moyne Shire and Cr Ian Smith should be lobbying Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg to act on the gas cartel market.
“Communities are still following the issue closely and will not be discouraged by the Moyne Shire motion. It just shows how out of step they are with community opinion”.
